Being referred to a specialist

If your GP thinks you need to see a specialist, they will refer you to a hospital or clinic. Most referrals are made using the NHS e-Referral Service, which lets you choose where and when you are seen.

What happens next

  • Your GP sends the referral, usually within a few working days of your appointment.
  • You will receive a letter or text with a booking reference and password, or the hospital will contact you directly.
  • You can book, check or change your appointment online at the NHS e-Referral Service, through the NHS App, or by calling the number on your letter.

How long will I wait?

Waiting times vary by service. You can see typical waiting times for your hospital, and what to do while you wait, on My Planned Care.

If you have not heard anything

If you have not been contacted within a few weeks, please ring the hospital booking line on your referral letter first. If you do not have a letter, contact the surgery on 01668 213738 (Belford) or 01665 720917 (Seahouses) and we will check the referral has been received.

If your symptoms get worse

While you are waiting, if your symptoms change or get worse, contact the surgery. If you need urgent advice when we are closed, use NHS 111 online or call 111. In an emergency call 999.
